It has bloomed to become one of fastest growing tech companies in Asia Pacific

EDWARD Anthony describes himself as an accidental entrepreneur.

The 29-year-old never thought of owning a company but as it turned out, he is currently chief executive officer and partner of Kreateevee Sdn Bhd, a digital signage company.

Anthony had studied information technology (IT) in Boston, US and joined the corporate world upon graduation.

The turning point in his life came five years ago when he was offered a partnership in a company together with a group of friends.

He accepted the offer without thinking twice.

Edward Anthony says the most difficult part when his team started out was trying to convince people that the company's concepts and products worked.

“Initially, we wanted to start an advertising company but we realised that the competition is very stiff especially when there are so many big boys out there,” he told StarBiz in an interview.

After a brainstorming session, the partners came up with the idea of setting up a specialist digital signage company.

“With the various changes in the advertising industry and the advancement in multimedia content, digital signages have also become more popular, so we decided to venture into this field,” he said.

Kreateevee, founded in 2003, is one of the pioneers of digital signage in Malaysia. The software developer and system integrator is also an MSC-status company.

Although relatively new, Kreateevee is one of the leading digital signage and interactive solutions companies in Malaysia.

It provides digital screens as well as content creation and management; hence the name which is a play on the combined words of “creative” and “TV”.

“We started with a very small team of young, energetic, creative and technical minds,” Anthony said. “In 2003, there were only four of us and we had to do everything from raising capital to marketing to potential clients. Each of us was multi-tasking.”

The company had since expanded with a research and development unit of its own, he added.

“The most difficult part for us when we started was trying to convince people that our concepts and products actually work,” Anthony recalled. “We did not have any recognition or any job portfolio that we could actually show potential clients then.”

“There was a lot of drama, ‘fighting’ and arguments among ourselves but we stuck together and managed to come up with lots of ideas and proposals,” he added.

Kreateevee has since more than bagged a few customers, but the company is still continuing its efforts to educate people about the industry.

For the past three years, Kreateevee has experienced tremendous growth, with revenue and net profit swelling by over 280% and 350% respectively.

Currently, its biggest client is Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) which it is helping to “deploy” its digital solutions to all Maybank branches.

Anthony said Maybank had more than 400 branches and deployment currently covered only about 5% of the total.

“It will probably take us about two years to fully deploy all branches,” he said.

Celcom, Maxis, McDonald’s, Bacardi, Carlsberg and Tune Hotels are among its other local clients while its international clientele include Nokia, Philips, Bacardi, Dewars Whiskey, Honda and Debenhams.

Going forward, Kreateevee will be introducing more products as well as improving its exisiting products to stay competitive.

“We are not a big risk taker, so we will grow the company steadily and organically. We are also trying to penetrate the British market and increase our presence in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia,” Anthony said.

He said there was a lot of demand for digital signages in Britain but the content was not moving fast.

“We are trying to get in to create content in Britain. We are trying to get an audience with potential clients there but there is nothing substantial yet,” he added.

According to a survey, the digital signage and desktop video market is estimated to grow to US$3.63bil in 2011 from US$404mil in 2007.

Kreateevee recently won the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 Asia Pacific 2007 award.

It was ranked 193 among the 500 fastest growing technology companies in Asia Pacific.

Among the 12 Malaysian companies selected, it was ranked fourth and was the only digital signage and interactive media company in the select group.
